The Signature

The smell of
Awaken Zen Spa.

Every spa has a scent. The combination of things used — the oils, the linens, the cleaning products — builds an olfactory identity that clients associate with the experience of being there. At Awaken Zen Spa, that identity is this cleaner. Rosemary. Cypress. The dry, mineral character of carrot seed and helichrysum. Something that reads unmistakably as both clean and botanical.

It's not an accident. The five essential oils in this formula were chosen as much for what they smell like together as for what they do. A cleaner that leaves behind a chemical odor tells clients something was scrubbed. A cleaner that leaves behind the scent of rosemary and cypress tells them something was cared for.

"It reminds me of my favorite rock shop in Mesa — cool, mineral, earthy. The kind of place where the air feels ancient."
— Brant, Owner & LMT, Awaken Zen Spa
What that means aromatically
A rock shop smells like the inside of the earth: mineral dust, old stone, something slightly resinous and cool. Dry without being arid. Natural without being sweet. The carrot seed and helichrysum in this formula carry exactly that quality — earthy, slightly medicinal, ancient-feeling. Combined with rosemary's green, camphoraceous brightness and cypress's cool, dry woodiness, the overall scent is grounded in a way that most cleaning products actively work against.
Where To Use It

Every hard surface.
Every room.

This is a general-purpose hard surface cleaner built around an isopropanol base that is effective on essentially any non-porous surface. The five EOs add genuine antimicrobial activity on top of the isopropanol's disinfecting power. Spray, wipe, done.

Treatment Tables & Massage Equipment
What this formula was made for. The specific use case at AZS: thorough wipe-down of massage tables, bolsters, and any equipment between every session. The isopropanol base disinfects; the rosemary and cypress leave behind the scent clients associate with being in a properly maintained spa.
Kitchen Counters & Food-Prep Surfaces
Rosemary's rosmarinic acid and cypress's antibacterial terpenes work well on food-contact surfaces — and leave no synthetic chemical residue behind. The scent is clean without reading as antiseptic, making kitchen cleaning feel less clinical.
Bathroom Surfaces
Counters, fixtures, door handles, cabinet fronts — any non-porous bathroom surface. The isopropanol base handles standard bathroom bacteria effectively. The botanical scent transforms the olfactory experience of bathroom cleaning from distinctly chemical to genuinely pleasant.
Desks, Electronics Surfaces & Workspaces
Phone screens, keyboard surrounds, desk surfaces, doorknobs, light switches — the high-contact surfaces that accumulate pathogen load throughout the day. The isopropanol evaporates cleanly; the EOs leave a brief aromatic presence without being overpowering in enclosed workspaces.
Entryways & High-Touch Zones
Door handles, light switches, hand rails — the surfaces touched most frequently and cleaned least consistently. A spray-and-wipe habit with Rosemary Renewal takes 30 seconds and meaningfully reduces pathogen transmission in shared spaces.
The Science

Why it works —
not just why it smells good.

A botanical cleaner that doesn't actually clean is just air freshener. Rosemary Renewal earns its "antibacterial" claim through two layered mechanisms: the isopropanol base handles the heavy lifting, and five essential oils contribute genuine, researched antimicrobial activity on top of it. This isn't EO theater — it's a formula where every active ingredient has a documented function.

The combination is also more effective than isopropanol alone. Research consistently shows that pairing alcohol with plant-derived antimicrobials produces synergistic inhibition — the EOs sensitize bacterial cell membranes, making the isopropanol's disruption of cellular function faster and more complete. The essential oils are not decoration for a chemical cleaner. They improve it.

Primary Active · Disinfectant
Isopropanol (Isopropyl Alcohol)
The formula's primary antimicrobial agent. Isopropanol denatures bacterial proteins and disrupts cell membranes at concentrations above 60% — a mechanism that is effective against virtually all non-spore-forming bacteria, most viruses, and many fungi. Unlike bleach-based cleaners, isopropanol evaporates completely without leaving residue, requires no rinse, and doesn't degrade most hard surface materials. It is the active ingredient in most hospital-grade hand sanitizers and surface disinfectants for precisely these reasons.

How the five essential oils contribute antimicrobial activity beyond the isopropanol base:

Membrane Disruption
Rosemary's 1,8-cineole and camphor, and cypress's alpha-pinene, disrupt bacterial cell membranes — increasing permeability and making bacteria more vulnerable to the isopropanol's primary mechanism. The EOs act as "sensitizers" that improve the overall kill rate.
Biofilm Inhibition
Rosemary's rosmarinic acid and carrot seed's carotol have demonstrated ability to inhibit biofilm formation — the protective matrix bacteria build on hard surfaces. Isopropanol kills planktonic bacteria but is less effective against mature biofilm; the EOs address this gap.
Extended Surface Activity
Isopropanol evaporates rapidly, limiting its active window. Helichrysum and sweet marjoram, which evaporate more slowly, provide a brief period of continued antimicrobial activity on the surface after the isopropanol has dissipated — extending the effective window of the cleaning event.
Air Pathogen Reduction
The volatilization of the essential oils during spraying — particularly rosemary's 1,8-cineole and cypress's monoterpenes — creates a brief period of airborne antimicrobial activity in the immediate environment. A cleaning product that briefly sanitizes the air it's sprayed in, not just the surface it contacts.

Aromatics that clean.
Not decoration.

Every essential oil in this formula was chosen for documented antimicrobial or skin-protective activity — and the scent they produce together is a consequence of that selection, not the primary goal. Rosemary leads with green camphoraceous brightness. Cypress adds cool, dry woodiness. Sweet marjoram provides the herbal warmth that softens everything. Helichrysum and carrot seed ground the composition in something mineral and earthy — the rock-shop quality that makes this smell like nowhere else.

Lead · Signature
Rosemary EO
The dominant note and the formula's namesake. Rosemary's camphoraceous, green-herbal character is immediately recognizable and forms the aromatic identity of this cleaner. 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) gives rosemary its sharp, clean quality — the same compound that makes eucalyptus feel antiseptic. Where eucalyptus reads as medicinal, rosemary reads as herbal and culinary: clean, alive, warm-green.
Antimicrobial Action Rosmarinic acid, 1,8-cineole, camphor, and alpha-pinene collectively provide broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, documented biofilm inhibition, and antifungal properties. Rosemary EO is one of the most studied botanical antimicrobials in food science and surface sanitation research.
Structure · Cool Dry
Cypress EO
The blend's dry, resinous framework. Cypress essential oil has a sharp, woody-coniferous quality that is drier and more mineral than pine — closer to the smell of rock and dry bark than forest floor. Alpha-pinene and delta-3-carene give cypress its characteristic dryness, which complements and contrasts rosemary's green warmth. Together they create the "outside" quality of the cleaner's scent — air and stone rather than lab.
Antimicrobial Action Alpha-pinene and camphene disrupt bacterial cell membranes and have documented activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Cypress EO also has astringent properties relevant to surface application — tightening and drying treated surfaces rather than leaving them feeling damp.
Warmth · Herbal Bridge
Sweet Marjoram EO
The note that makes the composition feel warm rather than cold. Sweet marjoram's gentle herbal character — oregano-adjacent but softer, less pungent — bridges the sharper rosemary-cypress pairing into something rounded and full. Terpinen-4-ol, marjoram's primary active compound, is one of the most effective naturally-derived bactericidal agents identified in aromatic plant research. Used at precisely the right concentration, it rounds the edges without dominating.
Antimicrobial Action Terpinen-4-ol provides potent broad-spectrum bactericidal activity — the same compound responsible for tea tree oil's antimicrobial efficacy, but with a significantly more pleasant aromatic profile. Also antifungal and documented effective against a range of common surface pathogens.
Mineral · Healing
Helichrysum EO
The mineral-resinous depth that anchors the rock-shop quality. Helichrysum italicum (also called "immortelle" or "everlasting") has a complex, slightly honey-like, slightly medicinal earthiness that is unlike anything else in aromatherapy. Its neryl acetate and italidiones contribute both the characteristic scent and its documented anti-inflammatory and tissue-healing properties. In this cleaner, helichrysum provides the old-stone quality that makes the scent feel geological rather than botanical.
Antimicrobial Action Helichrysum has documented antibacterial activity against a range of gram-positive pathogens. Its italidiones also provide mild antioxidant activity that protects the formula's other aromatic compounds from degradation — acting as a natural stabilizer for the EO blend.
Earth · Ancient
Carrot Seed EO
The earthiest, most unusual note in the blend — and the one that most directly creates the mineral-soil quality that distinguishes this cleaner from anything in the conventional category. Daucus carota seed oil has a dry, earthy, slightly sweet rootiness that reads as ancient and geological. Carotol — its primary sesquiterpene — is responsible both for the characteristic scent and for carrot seed's documented antimicrobial and antifungal properties. It is the note that, more than any other, gives this formula its specific identity.
Antimicrobial Action Carotol and bisabolene have demonstrated antifungal activity against a range of mold and fungal species — particularly relevant for bathroom applications where mold is a persistent surface concern. Carrot seed EO also has documented antibacterial activity, particularly against gram-negative bacteria.

Seven ingredients.
Every one listed.

A cleaner formula is one of the simplest in the AZS line — water, active disinfectant, and five essential oils. No thickeners, no synthetic fragrance, no surfactant package, no added color. No percentages, but full disclosure of every ingredient and its function.

Phase A · Water Base
Distilled Water
The formula's continuous phase. Distilled rather than tap water eliminates dissolved minerals and chlorine that would interfere with the essential oil dispersion and potentially leave residue on cleaned surfaces. Provides the volume and dilutes the isopropanol to an optimal working concentration.
Phase A · Primary Active
Isopropanol
Isopropyl alcohol — the formula's primary disinfectant. Denatures bacterial proteins and disrupts cell membranes, providing broad-spectrum antibacterial and antiviral activity effective against most non-spore-forming pathogens. Evaporates completely without residue. Used at a concentration calibrated for effective surface disinfection while remaining safe for application on finished surfaces, electronics exteriors, and food-adjacent areas.
Phase B · Essential Oils
Rosemary EO
The lead aromatic and the formula's primary EO antimicrobial. Rosmarinus officinalis provides 1,8-cineole, camphor, alpha-pinene, and rosmarinic acid — a comprehensive natural antimicrobial profile. The green, camphoraceous scent is the dominant aromatic character of the finished cleaner and the most immediately recognizable element of the AZS signature scent.
Phase B · Essential Oils
Cypress EO
Cupressus sempervirens — dry, coniferous, mineral. Alpha-pinene and delta-3-carene provide both the cool, stone-like aromatic quality and genuine membrane-disrupting antimicrobial activity. The note that makes the cleaner smell like outdoor air rather than indoor chemical.
Phase B · Essential Oils
Sweet Marjoram EO
Origanum majorana — the herbal bridge that warms and rounds the rosemary-cypress pairing. Terpinen-4-ol is sweet marjoram's primary active compound and one of the most effective naturally-occurring bactericidal agents. It provides the blend's herbal warmth while contributing potent broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal activity.
Phase B · Essential Oils
Helichrysum EO
Helichrysum italicum — mineral, slightly resinous, deeply earthy. Provides the geological depth that makes this cleaner's scent unique. Neryl acetate and italidiones contribute the characteristic old-stone quality and documented antibacterial activity against gram-positive pathogens. Also acts as a natural stabilizer for the other EO compounds in the formula.
Phase B · Essential Oils
Carrot Seed EO
Daucus carota — the earthiest, most singular note in the blend. Carotol and bisabolene provide the dry, root-mineral scent that anchors the formula in something ancient and geological, and contribute documented antifungal activity that makes this formula particularly relevant for bathroom and damp-environment surface cleaning.

On the formula: Seven ingredients, all disclosed. No percentages published — our specific ratios are proprietary — but every ingredient is named and explained. Shake well before use: the essential oils will naturally separate from the water-isopropanol base between uses.

Cleaning that
tells a better story.

Genuine Antibacterial Efficacy
The isopropanol base alone is clinically effective at standard disinfecting concentrations — this is not a "natural" cleaner that works by suggestion. The five essential oils add layered antimicrobial activity through three independent mechanisms: membrane sensitization, biofilm inhibition, and extended post-evaporation surface activity.
Atmospheric Cleaning
The volatilization of rosemary's 1,8-cineole and cypress's monoterpenes during spraying creates a brief period of airborne antimicrobial activity — a quality that conventional chemical cleaners actively avoid. The spray briefly sanitizes the air it's deployed in, not only the surface it contacts.
No Chemical Odor
Conventional cleaners replace biological contamination with chemical contamination — the smell of bleach, quaternary ammonium compounds, or synthetic fragrance. Rosemary Renewal leaves surfaces smelling like the herbs and minerals that cleaned them. The olfactory environment after cleaning is better than before, not differently worse.
No Residue
Isopropanol evaporates completely. The essential oils leave only their aromatic signature, not a film. Surfaces cleaned with Rosemary Renewal don't require a rinse, don't feel tacky, and don't leave cloudy residue on glass or mirrors. Spray, wipe, done — with no secondary cleanup required.
Synergistic Antimicrobial Action
Research shows that pairing alcohol-based disinfectants with essential oil antimicrobials produces synergistic inhibition — the EOs don't merely add to the isopropanol's efficacy, they amplify it. The combination provides broader coverage and faster kill rates than either mechanism alone.
Brings the Spa Home
This is the exact product used to prepare every treatment surface at Awaken Zen Spa before every session. Purchasing it means the specific smell that clients associate with care and cleanliness at AZS can become the smell of their own home's cleaning routine — a sensory anchor that belongs to both spaces.
Rosemary Renewal Cleaner AZS · 16 oz

Spray. Wipe.
Breathe it in.

The mechanics of using this cleaner are the same as any spray cleaner. The difference is what happens to the room when you do — the scent of rosemary and cypress that hangs in the air for a few minutes after spraying, and the knowledge that what cleaned the surface was also doing something good to the air.

Shake before use
The essential oils will separate from the water-isopropanol base between uses — a natural consequence of mixing oils with water. A few shakes before each spray ensures the aromatic compounds are evenly distributed in every application. A settled bottle delivers isopropanol without EO benefit; a shaken bottle delivers both.
Spray directly onto surfaces
Apply 2–4 sprays to the surface being cleaned. For small areas (countertop section, phone screen), 1–2 sprays is sufficient. For larger surfaces (massage table, full countertop), spray in sections. No dilution needed — the formula is ready to use at working concentration.
Wipe with a clean cloth
Use a clean microfiber cloth or paper towel. Wipe in even strokes, covering the sprayed area fully. For disinfection purposes, allow the sprayed surface to remain visibly wet for 30–60 seconds before wiping if working with a surface with known contamination. For routine cleaning, immediate wiping is fine.
No rinse required
The isopropanol evaporates completely; the essential oils leave no tacky residue. Cleaned surfaces are immediately dry-to-the-touch and require no secondary wipe with water. Safe for food-adjacent surfaces when dry — the brief aromatic presence dissipates within minutes.
For massage tables: spray-and-wipe between every session
The AZS protocol: spray the full table surface, bolsters, and any equipment that had client contact. Wipe thoroughly. The 30-second dwell time during a sheet change is more than sufficient for the isopropanol to do its disinfecting work before the next client. This is how this product was designed to be used.
Safety Notes
For external surface use only. Not for skin application, ingestion, or fabric.
Flammable — keep away from open flame or ignition sources during application.
Avoid spraying near eyes. If eye contact occurs, flush with water.
Not recommended for use on natural stone (marble, limestone) or rubber surfaces — test in inconspicuous area first.
Store below 30°C away from direct sunlight to protect EO compound integrity.
