A dedicated prenatal massage designed specifically for the pregnant body — carried out in a comfortable side-lying position with full pillow support at every stage. Thoughtful, skilled, and unhurried from the first trimester through the third.
Prenatal massage is available in three session lengths, each one a complete, nurturing experience from start to finish. We recommend at least 90 minutes when you can — your body deserves the extra time.
Prenatal massage at Awaken Zen Spa is built around one core commitment: your safety and comfort come first, always. The way we position, support, and move through a session is intentional at every step.
We work with you in a side-lying position throughout the entire session — the safest and most comfortable approach for pregnancy. Multiple pillows support your head, belly, knees, and ankles, so your body is fully cradled and at ease from the moment you settle in. We'll adjust positioning throughout as needed.
No two pregnancies feel the same, and no two sessions are identical. We check in on your focus areas, any discomfort, pressure sensitivity, and how you're feeling that day before we begin — and we adjust throughout. The goal is a session that meets your body where it actually is right now, not where it was last time.
Prenatal work uses intentionally slower, flowing strokes — not because it's a lighter service, but because the nervous system responds better to sustained, rhythmic touch during pregnancy. The result is profound relaxation alongside genuine physical relief: less aching, less swelling, less holding. It does real work with a gentle hand.
Every decision in a prenatal session — positioning, pressure, areas addressed — is made with your and your baby's safety as the baseline. We avoid contraindicated pressure points and keep positioning squarely within safe, evidence-informed practice throughout every trimester.
Your comfort is the guide. We establish your pressure preference before we begin and check in throughout. If something shifts — and things do shift during pregnancy — we adjust immediately and without question. You should never be tolerating anything during this session.
Prenatal massage isn't meant to be rushed. We slow everything down deliberately — transitions, stroke rhythm, position changes — because that pace is itself therapeutic. The nervous system settles when the body stops being moved through quickly. We hold space for that.
Pregnancy asks a lot of the whole body, not just the lower back. We address the upper back and shoulders (which compensate constantly), the hips and glutes (which carry the shifted load), the legs and feet (which swell and ache), and the neck (which holds accumulated tension from changing posture). Every area matters.
We keep the environment simple and the products pregnancy-appropriate. No strong essential oils or scents unless you specifically request them — sensitivities run high during pregnancy and we don't assume. Just calm, clean, intentional care.
"Pregnancy is one of the most physically demanding things a body can do. You don't have to just get through it — you deserve real support along the way."— Brant, LMT & Co-Founder
Here's how a prenatal session at Awaken Zen Spa unfolds — from the moment you arrive through to how you'll feel walking out.
Prenatal massage draws from the same classical toolkit as Swedish massage — adapted in pressure, depth, and positioning to honor the pregnant body at every stage of your journey.
Long, flowing strokes that warm the tissue, calm the nervous system, and create the rhythmic quality that makes prenatal massage so deeply settling. Applied more slowly and broadly than in standard Swedish work — covering the back, hips, and thighs with full, connected passes.
Gentle kneading and lifting of the muscle tissue to address the deeper holding patterns that develop in the glutes, hips, and upper back during pregnancy. Applied thoughtfully and without the deeper pressure used in standard therapeutic work.
Focused work around the sacrum, SI joint, and glutes — the area that bears the most postural strain as the belly grows and the center of gravity shifts. Careful, sustained pressure here provides some of the most immediate relief of the entire session.
Light, directed strokes toward the lymph nodes to support the circulatory system and address the fluid retention that commonly builds in the ankles, feet, and hands during the second and third trimester. Gentle by nature, and genuinely effective.
Careful, supported lengthening of the hips, inner thighs, and lower back — regions that become increasingly restricted as the pregnancy progresses. All stretching is done within comfortable, safe ranges with full control and no momentum.
Steady, broad pressure applied through the palm into the back and hip muscles — warming and softening the tissue before more specific work without requiring repositioning. Grounding and effective, particularly in later trimesters.
Prenatal massage isn't just about relaxation — though it delivers that in full. Regular massage throughout pregnancy has been shown to support both physical comfort and emotional wellbeing in meaningful, lasting ways.
The most-requested benefit, and deservedly so. Sustained work through the lumbar region, glutes, and SI joint addresses the pain that accumulates as your center of gravity shifts and your body adjusts to carrying new weight.
Lymphatic drainage strokes help move excess fluid that tends to pool in the ankles, feet, and hands — a common source of discomfort in the second and third trimester. Many clients notice visible reduction after a single session.
One of the most consistent outcomes clients report. When the body unwinds and the nervous system settles into a parasympathetic state, sleep quality improves — often noticeably for several nights following a session.
Sciatic pain during pregnancy often originates from tension in the piriformis and surrounding hip rotators as they tighten around the nerve. Targeted glute and hip work can provide significant and immediate relief from that familiar shooting ache.
Pregnancy brings significant hormonal shifts — and massage has been shown to meaningfully support mood by reducing cortisol and encouraging serotonin and dopamine. Many clients describe the post-session state as a rare window of genuine calm.
Shoulder and neck work addresses the tension that builds from postural changes, stress, and disrupted sleep — a common culprit behind the headaches that accompany many pregnancies. Releasing the traps and cervicals often brings quick, noticeable relief.
Prenatal massage is appropriate for most healthy pregnancies. Here's who we love to work with — and the circumstances where we'll ask you to check with your provider first.
We're not your healthcare provider, and we won't pretend to be. If you have any concerns or your pregnancy has complications, please check with your OB or midwife before booking. We're happy to answer questions about our approach if it helps that conversation.
The work doesn't stop when you leave the table. A little simple aftercare goes a long way in extending the benefits of your session — especially during pregnancy.
Take your time getting up — we'll assist you from the table. Drink water when you get home. Your body has been working during this session even if it didn't feel like effort, and hydration helps clear what's been moved. Give yourself at least 30 minutes before resuming anything demanding.
Recommended: Water + 30 minutes of quietYou may feel an unusual depth of relaxation — that's the point. Sleep is often better the night of a session. Avoid strenuous activity for the remainder of the day. A warm shower and an early night are ideal companions to what you've just done for your body.
Recommended: Light movement only, early restMost expecting clients find monthly sessions meaningful in the first trimester, shifting to every two to three weeks through the second and third as the body changes more rapidly. There's no requirement — come when you need it. But regular touch throughout pregnancy is one of the kindest things you can do for yourself.
Recommended: Monthly in T1 · Biweekly in T2–T3A private, quiet suite in Mesa with nothing competing for your attention. Warm lighting, soft sound, and a table set up specifically for your session before you arrive. This is your hour.
